Clay Images and Ancient Tombs: A Historical Journey
Duration: Approx. 3 hours
Shibayama-machi embraces approximately 500 ancient tombs in various sizes. Stood in the center of the tomb area, the most known Tonozuka and Himezuka are designated as national historic sights. “Soretsu Haniwa,” meaning funeral procession clay images, have excavated here in a nearly complete shape so are variable historical materials. On this route, you’ll visit a museum housing those images altogether with other unique clay items as well as historical tombs. Make your mind drift back over the ancient culture.
Tour of Shibayama-machi, A Town of Green and Sky

Ancient Approach and Shibayama-nioson, the historical Kannon Temple (Walking Course)

Shibayama-nioson Kannonkyo-ji has been a busy and traditional temple since Edo period as well as Narita-san Shinsho-ji. Firefighters and other common people in the period especially worshiped the temple for its Nioh guardian gods, which attract fortunes for fire and thief protection. Yamanaka-kodo is an ancient approach to the temple. This route will guide you to the Kannon temple through the same path as people in Edo used to walk. Feel the romance of the history.
A Woodland Walk: Shibayama-machi = Aircrafts × Rural Sceneries (Walking Course)
